I found this tiny brass SPOON in my mother’s old drawer, but i have no idea what it is. does anyone know?

While cleaning out one of my mother’s old drawers, I found a tiny brass object that looked almost like a very small spoon.

At first, I could not help wondering what anyone could possibly eat with it. The scoop was much too small for food, and the handle was long, thin, and decorated with little raised rings. It looked old, carefully made, and clearly not something from a modern kitchen.

The more I looked at it, the more curious I became.

It was not a toy spoon. It was not part of a dollhouse set. And it did not seem like a piece of jewelry either. It looked like a small tool from another time, the kind of thing people once kept in personal care boxes, sewing drawers, or old travel kits.

After asking around and doing a little research, I learned that this object is most likely an old ear spoon, also known as an ear pick.

These small tools were once used for personal grooming. The tiny scoop at the end was designed to carefully remove wax from the outer part of the ear. The long handle made it easy to hold, and the small curved tip helped collect wax without needing a large tool.

In many parts of the world, especially in older households, ear spoons like this were quite common. Some were made of brass, some of silver, and some came in small grooming sets along with nail cleaners, tweezers, and other personal care items.

The way it was used was simple.

A person would hold the long handle and use the tiny scoop only near the entrance of the ear. It was not meant to be pushed deep inside. The scoop was used gently, then wiped clean after use. Because the tool was made of metal, it could last for many years if it was washed, dried, and stored properly.

Some people also used similar tiny scoop tools for cleaning under fingernails. The small curved end could remove dirt from tight spaces, while the narrow handle made it easy to control. Before modern nail kits became common, little metal grooming tools like this were often part of everyday life.

There are a few other possible uses too.

Tiny spoons like this were sometimes used to handle very small amounts of powder, medicine, herbs, or cosmetics. In the past, people kept many small tools for specific purposes, and not everything had one single use. That is why these objects can be confusing today.

Still, judging by the size, shape, and scoop at the end, the most likely answer is that it was a personal grooming tool, either an ear spoon or a nail-cleaning tool.

Today, most people do not use these anymore.
